Thoracic Procedures

Robotic Surgery: The New Face of Thoracic Surgery

Traditional thoracic surgical procedures can be intimidating to some. Not only are they highly invasive, but they often require a long and painful recovery process. The traditional method of performing thoracic procedures involves making large incisions around the chest cavity. Some cases might even require breaking the sternum open in order to gain access to the surgical sight. This entire process can be traumatizing, both emotionally and physically. Luckily, robotic thoracic procedures, including wedge resections, have changed the lives of many people affected by cancer.

At miVIP, we are proud to offer our patients robotic thoracic procedures. Using the cutting-edge da Vinci technology, our surgeons are able to perform minimally invasive surgeries for a wide variety of thoracic conditions. Da Vinci robotic-assisted surgeries have enhanced features, including complete magnification, three-dimensional stereoscopic visualization and tremor reduction, minimizing the risk of error or tissue damage. It also allows the surgeon to complete the procedure using precise and detailed movements.

Common Thoracic Procedures Performed by miVIP

The professional surgical team at miVIP has received extensive training using da Vinci technology and is confident in their ability to successfully complete many types of robotic thoracic surgeries. Our outpatient thoracic surgeries include the following:

  • Sympathectomy: Patients who suffer from over stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system may experience sweaty palms or other irritating symptoms. Often times, this complicated surgery involves carefully severing specific nerves in the spinal column. Da Vinci technology allows the surgeon to operate on the nerves in precise detail, with increased stability and visualization.
  • Wedge Resections: Patients who have been turned down for traditional open lung operations may find success in a wedge resection. This procedure enables the surgeon to remove a tumor located within the lung without requiring removal of the entire lung lobe. Through robotic-assisted technology, the patient is able to have the life-saving procedure and in most cases, experience a fast recovery.
  • Lymph Node Surgery: When a patient has been diagnosed with cancer, it is extremely important that their lymph nodes are biopsied in order to find the extent of cancer that is present in the tissues. Robotic lymph node surgery allows the node to be removed easily for further study.

Conditions of Thoracic Surgery

There are several conditions that may require a patient to undergo a wedge resection or another thoracic procedure; however, the most prominent conditions include lung cancer and hyperhidrosis.

Symptoms of Thoracic Conditions

Although lung cancer may be hard to detect without a surgical biopsy, there are several that can be indicative of the condition, including:

  • Persistent shoulder, back or chest pain that may worsen with deep breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • A new or chronic cough
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Increased fatigue
  • Coughing up blood

The main symptom of hyperhidrosis is a substantial amount of wetness on various parts of the body, including the under arms and palms.

The Recovery Process

Our minimally invasive robotic thoracic procedures produce less tissue damage than traditional surgical procedures. Da Vinci technology minimizes blood loss during the procedure, allowing our patients to enjoy a faster recovery process and less “down time.” You’ll be back on your feet in no time. Patients who undergo a robotic assisted thoracic procedure can also expect to experience less pain and have a reduced need for pain medications. Since the procedure is minimally invasive, you’ll have less scarring.
