About Ulcers

Allow miVIP to Repair the Holes in Your Tissue

Whenever there is a tear or hole in the lining of your organs, you have an ulcer. Depending on the circumstances, ulcers can either be easy to treat or they can lead to intense discomfort. If you are showing ulcer symptoms, allow a knowledgeable and experienced miVIP surgeon to perform an esophagogastroduodenoscopy. During the minimally invasive procedure we will examine the lining of your esophagus, upper small intestine and stomach. Afterwards, we can develop a treatment plan for any ulcers that are found.

Peptic/gastric ulcers are most often found in the digestive system in the top section of your small intestine or stomach. Studies have shown that roughly one in ten American citizens will develop a peptic ulcer at some point in their lives. Stomach ulcers and ulcers in the esophagus, on the other hand, are both quite rare.

It is believed that poor eating habits and stress can contribute to ulcers and ulcer symptoms, but proven causes include:

  • An overabundance of stomach acid
  • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacterium
  • Abuse of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

If you have H. pylori bacterium, you will want to strongly consider getting an esophagogastroduodenoscopy since 90 percent of duodenal ulcers are caused by the bacterium in addition to an estimated 80 percent of stomach ulcers.

Prevalent symptoms of ulcers include:

  • Heartburn
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • A burning sensation in the upper stomach area
  • Bloating
  • Tar-like, black or bloody stools

It is best that you contact your doctor immediately when you notice any ulcer symptoms, especially passing blood or vomiting. You might not be aware that you are losing blood, but dizziness and weakness are fairly good indicators.

Treatment Options

The cause of your ulcer will determine the most effective treatment option. Usually, an esophagogastroduodenoscopy can be done to take care of the bleeding through cauterization, chemical injection or clipping the site of the bleed. Additional treatment options include:

  • H. Pylori Ulcers – H. pylori can be treated with a special combination therapy made up of a proton pump inhibitor and two antibiotics. Getting rid of the bacterium helps a vast majority of patients who have ulcer symptoms
  • NSAIDs Ulcers – In this case, the patient will need to stop using NSAIDs and start taking acid relief pills. Roughly two months later, a majority of patients are mostly healed
  • All Other Causes – Another effective treatment option is for the individual to pay attention to the foods that they eat so that they do not increase their stomach acid. They might also have to quit smoking, lower their alcohol consumption, eat regular small meals and sleep at an incline

If you have an esophagogastroduodenoscopy at the Las Vegas miVIP surgery center, our surgeons will do everything they can to make sure that you recover as quickly as possible so that you can return to your usual day-to-day routine.

By treating the issue and specifically targeting H. pylori and NSAIDs, the prognosis for clearing up ulcers and ulcer symptoms is favorable. You will see a difference in a few weeks with regular ulcers, but serious ulcers might take a few months to clear up.
