Total Knee Replacement

Because Your Knee Has Needs

Every day, you subject your knees to constant stress. Over time, that stress can lead to painful joint inflammation. While these effects may be mitigated through changes in diet and exercise, many people often end up developing osteoarthritis. This condition is the leading contributor to the need for total knee replacement surgery. We at miVIP Las Vegas are renowned for the amazing results that our patients have seen following this procedure.

The decision to undergo a joint replacement procedure is not an easy one. It typically is only considered after other non-surgical treatments have been explored and a patient is still experiencing chronic pain. Not everyone is an ideal candidate for this procedure, either. Your pain history and what treatment options are available to you is a discussion that should be had with your primary care doctor before scheduling a consultation for surgery.

What Happens During the Procedure

Your knee joint is hinge joint that provides motion where the femur meets the tibia. In a total knee replacement, diseased or damaged bone or cartilage is removed and replaced with an artificial prosthesis. During the surgery, the lower end of the femur is replaced with a metal shell, while the upper end of the tibia is fitted with a plastic bearing with an underlying metal surface. The new joints are adhered to the bone with either cement or a porous material through which the bone eventually grows and attaches to the new joint.

Separating this from the typical joint replacement procedure is that fact that the surgeon must also address the ligaments of the knee, specifically the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). The PCL acts to stabilize the knee joint so that it doesn’t slide in relation to the femur. Depending upon its condition, that ligament is either retained or replaced with a flexible synthetic resin such as polyethylene.

What to Expect Following Your Surgery

Short term recovery from a total knee replacement takes about 10-12 weeks. During that time, you may experience some post-operative pain. A walker or crutches may be needed during the days immediately following surgery. Short term recovery ends when you can walk without assistance. Once that point is reached, the long term recovery process involves the complete healing of internal structures. Physical therapy may also be needed. The total recovery process can last up to sixth months.

What Are the Costs?

The cost of a joint replacement procedure should never be allowed to inhibit your decision to pursue this course of treatment. Most PPO plans will cover this procedure. If you’re concerned about your insurance coverage or what your out-of-pocket expense may be, feel free to speak to a member of our patient advocacy team.

Other Considerations

While a proven method at combating knee joint pain, an artificial joint is not permanent. The long term viability of the joint depends on several factors, including:

  • Your age at the time of the procedure
  • Your level of activity
  • Your occupation
  • Your overall physical health

Such factors have a direct influence on your recovery and the overall effectiveness of the surgery. Should you opt for this procedure at a younger age, there is a possibility of needing to have the joint replaced again later in life.
