Total Hip Replacement

How Your Hip Can Become Hip Again

Total hip replacement surgery is one of the most successful procedures in orthopedics. Every year in the United States, over 75,000 of these procedures are performed. Advances in the technology behind the surgery, as well as in our understanding of how the body deals with such a procedure, have allowed this surgical option to become available to more patients at a reduced age. At miVIP Las Vegas, we perform numerous successful hip replacements every year.

There are many factors that can contribute to chronic hip pain that eventually warrants joint replacement surgery. Chief among them is degenerative disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Injury or illness may also necessitate a total hip replacement. The decision to have such a surgery is usually made after a patient’s pain becomes so severe that it has a dramatic effect on their overall quality of life and pain medication is no longer enough to combat it.

The Hip Replacement Procedure

Your hip joint is not unlike a typical ball-and-socket joint. The “socket” bone, also called the acetabulum, is located in your pelvis, while the “ball” is at the head of your thighbone, or femur. In a total hip replacement, a metal or ceramic ball and stem is inserted into the femur, while a plastic or ceramic socket replaces the acetabulum. New joint material replaces any damaged cartilage.

Once the new joint is in place, it is either fixated to the bone with cement or with a porous coating applied at certain points around the affected area. After the procedure, the bone actually grows through the pores and reattaches to the joint. This “cementless” procedure is thought to hold up longer, and is typically the recommended method for younger patients.

What to Expect After Surgery

The specifics of your surgery determine what you can expect during recovery. Patients with a cemented hip may be able to apply weight to it immediately, while a cementless procedure may require that you wait up to six weeks before testing it with your full weight. Some post-operative pain is to be expected, and can be relieved through certain analgesics prescribed by your doctor. A minor course of physical therapy is usually required to help you get accustomed to functioning with your new hip.

What Does it Cost?

We employ a patient advocacy staff that deals with all of the issues involved in ensuring insurance coverage, including:

  • Benefit verification
  • Pre-authorization
  • Claims resolution

Most PPO insurance plans cover the procedures performed here at miVIP Las Vegas.
