Information about Enterocele

Understand Small Bowel Prolapse and How We Can Help

When the vaginal wall is weakened to the point that the bowel pushes into the lower pelvic cavity, the result is an enterocele, or small bladder prolapse. As the bowel pushes into the pelvic area, pressure is placed on the vagina and an outward bulge occurs.

In a minor case of enterocele, treatment can be given without posterior vaginal wall repair surgery, but severe cases result in serious damage to the muscle tissues of the vagina and are more effectively treated with surgery. Here at miVIP, we provide minimally invasive surgical options for the treatment of many gynecological conditions including small bowel prolapse.

Statistics about Enterocele

Enterocele is more common in postmenopausal women. Of the women that have had a hysterectomy, 79% developed an enterocele as they got older, and the median age for women that require surgery to treat this condition is 67.

Causes of Enterocele

Several situations may make women more prone to developing a small bowel prolapse.

  • Pelvic Surgery – The vaginal wall is weakened during a hysterectomy, eventually leading to enterocele.
  • Body Weight – Those who are overweight have more pressure on the pelvic muscles.
  • Connective Tissue Disease – A hereditary condition making women more prone to bowel prolapse.
  • Childbirth – Pelvic muscles can be weakened significantly during childbirth, making it more likely for enterocele to develop in women that are pregnant or those who have carried children in the past.

Enterocele Symptoms

The following are common signs of small bowel prolapse in women.

  • A bulge in the vaginal tissue
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Pulling sensation in the pelvic area that disappears when lying down or sitting
  • Pelvic pain or pressure

Treatment Options for Enterocele

A surgeon at miVIP can assess your condition and determine what type of treatment is preferred, but some women require a posterior vaginal wall repair surgery to remedy their enterocele symptoms.

During this procedure, done both robotically and non-robotically, the prolapsed bowel is pushed into place with entry gained through the vagina. The stretched-out or torn vaginal wall is then repaired, and most patients go home the same day of surgery.

Long-Term Prognosis for Treatment

Surgery is incredibly effective at treating and repairing a small bowel prolapse, but patients can also be proactive about reducing the risks of a recurring condition.

  • Lose weight
  • Increase fiber in diet to avoid constipation
  • Regularly perform Kegel exercises
  • Avoid placing strain on the pelvic muscles.
