Gallbladder Disease

Eliminating Gallbladder Disease Permanently

While most people are aware that the gallbladder has something to do with the liver, its function still remains a mystery to many. The gallbladder’s purpose is to collect bile from the liver, store it, and then secrete it into the small intestine when it is needed. When the gallbladder begins to fail or is affected by gallbladder disease, the most common solutions is to completely remove it from the body.

Our surgeons at miVIP are able to perform minimally invasive gallbladder removal, also known as a cholecystectomy procedure. The recovery from such a procedure is substantially shortened when compared to open surgery which is why it is preferred by patients and surgeons alike.

Statistics Concerning Infected Gallbladders

Gallbladder disease, or cholecystitis, can be caused by a well-known ailment—gallstones. Gallstones block the bile duct and are found in 10 to 20 percent of the residents of the United States. It is estimated that of men who are 75 years old or older, fully 20 percent of them will have had gallstones sometime in their lives.

Known Causes

Cholecystitis is normally defined as Inflammation of the gallbladder. It may be caused by one of several conditions:

  • Presence of gallstones which can block the bile duct
  • Bile duct blockage as a result of kinked tissue or scarring
  • Benign or malignant tumors

Common Symptoms of Cholecystitis

It is best to treat gallbladder disease early with a cholecystectomy procedure that is designed to avoid further complications. Some the symptoms that may indicate cholecystitis are:

  • Shooting pain centralized in the upper torso, beneath the right shoulder blade
  • Bloating
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Chills

Treatment Options

Choosing a minimally invasive cholecystectomy procedure is recommended for patients who know their gallbladders must be removed. Our surgeons are able to perform several different procedures, including:

  • Cholecystectomy Surgery – A laparoscopic surgery that employs a tiny camera to complete the gallbladder removal through one or more small incisions.
  • da Vinci Cholecystectomy – Use of the da Vinci robot surgical system for an even more precise cholecystectomy by making a single incision.
  • da Vinci Multi-Port Cholecystectomy – Similar to the above da Vinci cholecystectomy but requiring several tiny incisions rather than one.

Each procedure is slightly different, but all allow for a faster recovery than compared to open gallbladder surgery.

Living Without a Gallbladder

The most effective way to treat gallbladder disease is to completely remove the infected organ. This does not present any long term side effects as the body can function properly without the presence of a gallbladder. As with any surgery, there are associated risks. Patients should follow post-surgery instructions to the best of their ability in order to make a full and fast recovery.
